Parents and caregivers often feel helpless when their child (no matter the age) is experiencing a mental health issue such as depression, anxiety, or an eating disorder. They are also often left out of treatment: sometimes because the child or adolescent requests this; sometimes because the parent requests individual treatment for the child or adolescent; and sometimes due to agency protocol. Yet family members, if provided with the opportunity and the right tools, can often have the biggest impact on their loved one’s healing. This is where Emotion-Focused Family Therapy comes in. Informed by emotion and learning theory, Emotion-Focused School Support (EFSS) was developed based on feedback from educators and school support staff. It is a simple and efficient model for increasing the capacity of school staff to effectively respond to the emotion of students (and their parents) in order to facilitate a “return to learning”. EFSS can be applied to all students from kindergarten through to grade 12, with adjustments made to implementation according to developmental age. It is designed to support students while still respecting the primary mandates of teachers, aides, school counsellors and support staff - and without adding to the already high demands of the school day. Finally, EFSS involves opportunities for school staff to identify their strengths and challenges when faced with challenging interactions situations with students, their caregivers and even with colleagues. Newly developed, and informed by the neuroscience of emotion transformation and memory re-consolidation, the Process of Emotional Self-Exploration (PESE) is a brief yet powerful intervention that can be used when supporting individuals, couples and parents/caregivers. When used regularly, whether the client or dyad is in distress or interested in prevention, the PESE can significantly decrease reactivity to specific and general stressors, increase one’s capacity for self-soothing, and support the evolution of one’s inner architecture. The PESE can be used as a primer, primary or booster intervention. This intervention can also be used to support clinicians with processes of self-inquiry related to activations in response to those they serve. Theory and specific techniques will be reviewed according to its use in clinical settings, including a demonstration to support experiential learning. The script and handout are also provided to support your practice.

The Universal Apology is a therapeutic apology that can be delivered by nearly any parent or caregiver in North America. Until recently, parents were not taught to tend to their children’s emotions. Rather, they were encouraged to reassure, avoid, show the bright side or focus on problem-solving, increasing the risk of difficulties in their child’s development of emotion processing, and leaving many parent-child relationships vulnerable to ruptures of varying severity. This clinical training resource will offer theory and a clear script (with options) to support clinicians to support parents or caregivers in the development and delivery of a “universal therapeutic apology” related to the emotional culture of the system and its impact. This apology was developed to heal ruptures, strengthen relationships, and decrease self-stigma in an adolescent or adult child relating to difficulties with emotion processing and/or related mental health issues.
