Healing the Root of Negative Core Beliefs with Chair-Work
June 5, 2025 • 10am - 2pm MT / 12pm - 4pm ET - CE credit hours
Negative core beliefs (also known as primitive narratives of self-blame) are deeply rooted perceptions about oneself that tend to be self-critical, self-limiting and distorted. These beliefs typically form during early childhood, especially in response to trauma, criticism, rejection, or unmet needs. Classic examples include "I am unlovable", "I am bad", “It’s my fault”, and they affect every facet of one’s life, including decision-making with respect to relationships, work life, engagement in self-injurious behaviors (including people pleasing, workaholism, etc.) and failure to prioritize health-focused behaviors.
In addition, because negative core beliefs/primitive narratives of self-blame tend to develop in the formative years, they can be extremely resistant to change, and difficult to transform in the context of psychotherapy.
This training will cover relevant theory and skills to support the emotion-focused transformation of these maladaptive beliefs at their root, including with the use of scripted chair-work appropriate for individual and group psychotherapy settings. Learning this intervention – and the theory that underlies the healing process - can be transformative in one’s practice, even if you don’t end up integrating the chair-work script in your practice.
Teaching methods for this training include lecture, experiential engagement and video demonstration and participation can be active or passive. All participants will be provided with the script to follow along throughout the training and for their use subsequently if appropriate. This intervention is also referred to as Level 4 Therapeutic Apology as part of the Advanced EFFT curriculum, however, no prior training in EFFT is required to learn this stand-along intervention. Given the use of video, this training will not be recorded for participant play-back.
